Addiction Counselling in Ireland

A non-judgemental space to look honestly at drinking, using, gambling, or any pattern that's stopped feeling like a choice — without needing to have it all figured out before you come in.

Addiction rarely shows up on its own — it's usually tangled up with anxiety, trauma, grief, or simply a way of coping that worked once and has become harder to put down. Counselling here isn't about being told to stop; it's about understanding what the behaviour is doing for you, so you have a real choice about whether to keep doing it.

This work can sit alongside other supports you're already using — a GP, an addiction service, a 12-step group — or it can be the main place you're working through it. I also offer dedicated recovery coaching, a more structured, goal-focused option for people maintaining recovery alongside or after clinical treatment.

What addiction counselling involves

We begin with a free introductory call, usually around 15 minutes, and sessions are 50 minutes, in person in Cork city or online. You don't need to have stopped, to be sure you want to, or to have a label for what's going on. The work is to understand what the drinking, using or gambling does for you, what it costs, and what you want to do about it.

What people come in with

Alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, prescription medication, gambling, and other patterns such as compulsive use of pornography, shopping or the internet. Some people come before things have fallen apart, because they want to cut down or are worried about how much they're using. Others come after treatment, a relapse or a crisis. Many are also dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma or grief, and counselling looks at those too.

Addiction counselling in Cork and across Ireland

I see clients in person in Cork city, and online anywhere in Ireland, including Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Kerry. Online sessions suit people who want privacy, or who live far from specialist services.

Common questions

Do I need to be sober to start?

No. You can come while still drinking or using. If you drink heavily or use a substance that carries withdrawal risks, speak to your GP before stopping suddenly, because stopping abruptly can be dangerous.

Will you tell me to stop?

No. Counselling here isn't about being told what to do. It's about understanding the pattern well enough to make a real choice.

Is it confidential?

Yes. What you say stays between us, apart from the usual limits where there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, which I explain at the start. I don't contact your employer or family.

How is this different from rehab or a 12-step group?

Rehab and groups offer structured treatment and peer support. Individual counselling offers a private, one-to-one place to look at what sits underneath. Many people use it alongside a group, a GP or a service, and some use it on its own.

Do you offer recovery coaching?

Yes. It's a more structured, goal-focused option for people maintaining recovery alongside or after clinical treatment.

If you're in a medical emergency related to substance use (overdose, withdrawal risk), please call 999 or go to your nearest Emergency Department rather than waiting for a session.
